LCME Seeks Nominations for Public MemberThe Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) seeks help identifying citizens who can bring a public perspective to the process of evaluating medical education programs. The LCME now appoints three voting public members and is currently seeking nominations for one vacancy. Public members take part in establishing accreditation policy and procedures at LCME meetings held three times a year, in either Washington, D.C. or Chicago. They provide a perspective of the impact of the Committee's activities on the public (i.e. patients, healthcare costs, social accountability, students). They contribute to discussions about the accreditation status of medical schools and are invited to participate in at least one on-site review of a medical education program. Public members are voting members of the committee and serve a three-year term, renewable once. In order to ensure impartiality, candidates or their spouses should not be members of the medical profession, or be considered as sharing in the special interests of the medical education programs being evaluated. An interest in current issues of importance for health care and/or higher education is desirable. This is a voluntary appointment without compensation, but expenses incurred in conjunction with LCME activities are reimbursed. Nominations and applications should be accompanied by a resume or biographical sketch of the candidate, and a statement describing how the candidate's experience and background will lend a public perspective to the evaluation of programs in medical education. Materials should be sent via e-mail to: lcmesubmissions@aamc.org or by mail to: Dan Hunt, MD, MBA The deadline for nominations and applications has been extended to Friday, January 6, 2012.
