LCME Procedures and Policies

Rules of Procedure
Describes policies and practices related to LCME accreditation, the survey process, accreditation decisions and reporting, evaluation and revision of standards, complaint handling, appeals, and other procedures.

Functions and Structure of a Medical School
Contains the LCME standards for accreditation of medical education programs leading to the MD degree in the U.S. and Canada. Explanatory annotations are provided to clarify the meaning of standards when necessary. Use of the word "must" signifies an absolute requirement. "Should" is a requirement that must be met unless there is a compelling reason, acceptable to the LCME, for waiving the need to comply with the standard. An updated edition of Functions and Structure of a Medical School (F&S) is published every May. With only one exception, all medical education programs are subject to the most recent set of accreditation standards as outlined in the current edition of F&S. Programs currently engaged in the accreditation process who have already received a blank medical education database in advance of their survey visit will be subject to the standards in the database. Because schools are sent the database a year or more in advance of their survey visit, the standards contained in the database and those in the most current F&S are often out of sync.

Describes the procedures and format for conducting an independent student analysis of the medical education program, student services, and the learning environment. It also delineates the role of students in the accreditation process. This document is not specific to the 2012-2013 academic year.

LCME Connections

Connections
Provides an integrated view of LCME accreditation standards by connecting the text of each standard to (1) its corresponding annotation, (2) the medical education database questions related to that standard, (3) the questions that the institutional self-study committee must address and (4) the findings that survey team members must document in the survey report.

Each component of Connections is already accessible on the LCME website, albeit in various LCME publications. By connecting each standard to the relevant section of each related LCME publication, Connections provides a more nuanced understanding of the intent of each standard and the goals for the accreditation process. Over time, the LCME Secretariat will add additional information to the Connections document, including information about the frequency with which individual standards are cited, the specific nature of those citations, and a section for "Secretariat Comments" about the areas of noncompliance identified by teams during survey visits.

Annual Medical School Questionnaires

Annual Medical School Questionnaires
Each year, the LCME collects data about the structure and operations of accredited medical schools. The information is used for continuous monitoring of medical schools in the interval between surveys.
